This pioneer institute of Nursing is among the oldest institutes of Punjab. This prestigious institute was started in the early 20th century during the British era as a Nursing School and as a constituent part Victoria Jubilee Hospital and Glancy Medical School. The Nursing School was started with a vision to empower the women, to equip them with knowledge and skills for caring the diseased humanity in Majha area of Punjab apart from Lahore (now in Pakistan). As Nursing care is essential part in caring of person in health and disease. It forms the backbone of health care delivery system. The primary aim of the institute was to upgrade the knowledge, skill and standards of Nursing profession which is an integral part of the medical treatment. The Nursing School was started as a General Nursing & Midwifery training school with the intake of 25 students biannually and the duration of course was about four years. The Nursing School was working under the Nursing Superintendent of the Victoria Jubilee hospital. Meanwhile Glancy Medical School was also upgraded to Glancy Medical College and then subsequently to Govt. Medical College. It was the year 1972 when Nursing Schools came under the supervision and Administration of Principals a parallel post to the Nursing Superintendent. From 1972 the intake from 25 students biannually was increased to 35 students biannually and duration of GNM course was three years and six months. The students of this prestigious institute are serving globally and holding high positions in the health care system in the different states of our country as well as in other countries worldwide.


It was the year 1975 when Victoria Jubilee hospital was renamed as Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in the name of 9th Sikh Guru who sacrificed his life for the noble cause of humanity by standing against the atrocities committed by the cruel emperor of that time. From the year 1988 the intake of the Nursing School was 75 students annually with General Nursing & Midwifery training programme of three years duration. It was the year 2003 when Nursing School was upgraded to Nursing College. Now the annual intake of Nursing College is 50 students and is running B.Sc. Nursing Degree Course of Four years duration. Being the constituent college of Medical College now it is known as Govt. College of Nursing, SGTB Hospital and Govt. Medical College, Amritsar. The present building of Govt. College of Nursing was completed in 2010 and the institute started functioning in this very building from the 1st. January 2011. We have highly qualified, experienced and competent nursing faculty in all the specialties. We have well equipped labs and infrastructure as per Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi norms. This Govt. Institute is recognized by Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi and Punjab Nursing Registration Council, Chandigarh and is affiliated with Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot which is the first medical university of Punjab.
